Hazelnut Frappé For Pennies At Home!

Hazelnut Frappé For Pennies At Home!

I LOVE the taste of a good frozen coffee drink, Frappé or Frappuccino!! My absolute favorite is a Baskin Robbins Cappuccino Blast followed by Starbucks Mocha Frappuccino and McDonald's Mocha Frappé.

I'm about 10 miles from the nearest one of these locations. I take the kids to school (which is 3/4 of a mile from our house), drop them off and come home to work from home (most of the time, unless I've got a photo session which is usually a couple of times a week.) Anyway, it doesn't make sense to drive 10 miles and pay at least $4-$7 for one of these precious little drinks.

So I've been on a mission to develop a really good copycat recipe of a Starbucks Frappuccino. (Starbucks instead of Baskin Robbins because Baskin Robbins makes theirs from ice cream and it just seems too unhealthy to bust out the ice cream at 8am.)

So I tried a couple of methods that I had thought of and some that I had found online. Many recipes call for making and cooling coffee then blending with ice. To me those recipes get watery after sitting for a few minutes. I had seen a couple of recipes that called for freezing coffee cubes which in all honesty seemed like a little more work than I wanted to do and I wasn't really sure how freezing coffee and blending it would turn out. Then a couple of weeks ago my friend and I met up at this wonderful little coffee place in town and I noticed the owner blending our drinks from coffee cubes. It was like heaven in a cup! I knew she was on to something and decided I would follow her lead and try various amounts of coffee, milk and creamer until I found just the right mix for my at-home Frappuccino copycat recipe. This take a bit of planning but it's worth it. Make coffee cubes once every week or two or month and use them as you want. It's soooo worth it!
Here's the break down...

Make 3 cups of coffee as per directions. Stir in 1 Tablespoon of sugar, let cool,  pour into ice cube trays and pop in the freezer.

Once the coffee cubes have frozen, you'll need milk, Hazelnut creamer (or whatever flavor you like - think Pumpkin Spice Frappés or Mocha Frappés) and dairy whipped topping / cinnamon (optional).

Remove coffee cubes from the tray. Drop 3 coffee cubes into a blender with 1/3 cup milk and 1 Tbsp creamer. Blend until smooth. Store the remainder of the coffee cubes in a freezer bag.

Top with a little dairy whipped topping and cinnamon and voila! There it is!

The cost to make this drink, at this portion size is approximately 35-40 cents. Now realistically, you probably already have most of the items in your refrigerator and cabinet but just consider the savings! At approximately one tenth of the cost of some of the others, you've got the best knock off right at your fingertips and if you're like me and live in a rural area, it sure beats driving to town to spend your money!
